As a busy business executive, you need to keep up your fitness level. You may find that you have a Planet Fitness membership that isn’t transferrable because you’re relocating for business and there are no Planet Fitness gyms nearby. Or, you have chosen to work out locally or kitted out a home gym in your garage to save on commuting time and trimming your costs at the same time. Either way, there comes a time when you wish to cancel the membership with the gym chain and need to find an effective way to do so.
Most gyms are great at signing you up to long-term contracts which are difficult to extricate yourself from. This is usually done because many people get all enthusiastic in month one of exercise but drop off sooner after; gyms need to charge for the full year to make a profit. There are often cancelation fees under some circumstances to dissuade you from canceling the contract too.
Let’s look at ways to cancel your Planet Fitness membership.
Canceling in Person
When you’re interested in canceling Planet Fitness membership accounts, you can do so in person which is a direct way to handle it. The first step is to visit your local gym. There’s a cancelation membership form to complete. The form must be completed in full and then given to the member of staff at the reception area.
Arrangements should be made to stop future charges to your account for additional membership fees unless other arrangements have been made. It’s a good idea to double-check periodically that no additional charges have been levied and if so, to follow-up promptly to ensure that they are removed and that there will be no reoccurrence.
Canceling by Mail
In some situations, you’re no longer living near the Planet Fitness gym that you signed up to or just don’t have the time to go in and sort it out. In which case, it’s possible to deal with the matter by mail and avoid any possible confrontation with staff regarding cancelation who might be keen to encourage you to stay on as a member.
A letter sent to Planet Fitness requesting cancelation of your gym membership must include the following information:
- Your full name
- Planet Fitness ID number
- Full address
- Date of birth
- Email address
It’s useful to ensure that your name and gym ID number are given twice in the letter; once at the beginning and again at the end as a reminder. The letter must confirm your reason for cancelation too.
Once the letter is ready, it must be sent by certified mail using the correct postage. Once you’ve given the company a reasonable amount of time to respond, check that no further schedule billing charges have been made when they were previously going to be automatically paid. Follow-up if they were charged to get fees refunded back and to prevent further charges.
It should be noted that it’s not possible to cancel a membership with Planet Fitness via their website, by email or over the phone. Attending in person or writing in are the two ways that work.
With a 12-month contract, ending it before the period is up usually incurs a cancelation fee. Check with staff to verify what the cost will be to avoid surprises.
There are a couple of exceptions that waive the fee. These are if you’re medically unable to use the gym membership in which case a Doctor’s note is required confirming this or you’re moving to a new location that has no Planet Fitness facilities within a 25-mile radius.
It’s not as difficult as you’d expect to cancel a membership with Planet Fitness. It’s just about doing it the right way, so you know what to expect and this avoids any complications.
